Once Upon a Cold Winter's Hodgepodge

Well, have y'all thawed out yet?

I don't remember when it has been so cold for so many days in a row.
It has certainly been the main topic of conversation for days and days around here.
I mean, it has been FRIGID just about everywhere but we so called southerners
aren't quite used to such temperatures!
I have a high-school friend from Ohio that started making up "It was so cold..." jokes
and posting them on her Facebook page...
...she started out with one and before it was over, she was posting them several times a day
and they just seemed to just get funnier and funnier.
Or maybe they weren't actually all that funny but we just needed to laugh to stay warm!
Here is a compilation of some of them that decided I would share with you.

And along with this cold weather, came some beautiful skies...

...feather-like clouds...

...to mortars lighting up the darkening sky...

...to strange looking funnel-ish cloud formations...

I am forever amazed by the masterpieces the Master Artist paints for us all to enjoy!

So lets get to why we're here...the Hodgepodge.

1. January is National Mentoring Month. Have you ever had a mentor? Been a mentor? How would you rate the experience?

Wikipedia's definition is this: Mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. The mentor may be older or younger than the person being mentored, but he or she must have a certain area of expertise. If I was answering this off the top of my head, I wouldn't say I have been much of a mentor throughout my life. But when I really look at the given definition, I'd say that just about all of us, including myself, have been both the mentor and the mentee. Most every one of us have had mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and other women in our lives that have taken us under their wings... that we have learned from...God's word tells us we need to do this. And most of us have done likewise for the younger women/girls in our lives...some daughters, grand daughter, nieces, friends, etc. The only other time that I knowingly mentored someone is when I had to train a new employee in a job that I was knowledgeable in. Through the years I'd say I have had many mentors in one way or another and at the moment, nothing stands out in my memory about having a bad experience. I'll have to think more on that one.

Your job is to speak out on the things that make for solid doctrine. Guide older men into lives of temperance, dignity, and wisdom, into healthy faith, love, and endurance. Guide older women into lives of reverence so they end up as neither gossips nor drunks, but models of goodness. By looking at them, the younger women will know how to love their husbands and children, be virtuous and pure, keep a good house, be good wives. We don’t want anyone looking down on God’s Message because of their behavior.
Also, guide the young men to live disciplined lives.
Titus 2:3-6 MSG

2. What current trend makes no sense to you?

Aw, come on...just one? I have a whole bunch! Man buns, water bottle flip, fidget spinners, ripped and holy jeans, taking a knee (unless you are going to pray)...the list goes on and on.

3. I saw a cartoon on facebook highlighting a few 'weird' things that make you happy as an adult. The list included-writing with a nice pen, having plans cancelled, freshly cleaned sheets, eating the corner brownie, cleaning the dryer lint screen, and sipping coffee in that brief time before anyone else wakes up. (Credit for the cartoon goes here) Of the 'weird' things listed which one makes you happiest? What is one more 'weird' thing you'd add to the list?

I can actually agree with the ones listed except for maybe the dryer lint one...okay so maybe if I have just taken brand new towels or something fluffy that left a lot of lint behind.... I can kind of see how that might be just a tad gratifying. There are probably many more of my own that I could add to the list but the first one that I thought of was messing up that nice, fresh, semi-soft surface of a newly opened carton of ice cream...using a spoon (not the scooper) and taking a big bite!

4. What's the last good thing you ate?

That would be this...

I was wanting something like pizza but without the carbs. I regularly use the Mission Brand low carb flour tortillas for tacos and ultra thin crusts for personal pizzas but I tried something a little different for my supper tonight (Tuesday). I sauteed all of my pizza toppings together in a pan, added a little pizza sauce and then fried up the tortilla in olive oil. I then scooped all of the yummy toppings and placed them on the tortilla, added Italian cheese and folded it over to make...well...you could call it a "skinny calzone" or a "pizza quesadilla". It was great!

  1. The cold weather was here, also. Temps are supposed to be in the high 50s today and 60s by tomorrow a sure cry from 1degrees!

  4. I like all the cold weather 'funnies'. I read them scrolling on the weather channel too and it was cute. It was even cold all the way down here for a few days. But we are back around 70 this week! YAY! Love so many of your answers...ripped jeans are a mystery to me. Hugs!

  5. Those signs are really funny. I also don't get a lot of those 'fads'. However, the fidget spinner was really a blessing for my one grandson that is a whirlwind in motion. While he was spinning that he could also be concentrating on 'learning' something. Not all bad. Kid is super smart and it really helps him zero in. Funny- for my other grandson it is a distraction used to annoy his teacher (now banned in the schools here)--lol

Your meal looks great! Hope you have a blessed Wednesday- xo Diana

  6. Loving those beautiful pictures. That last one sorta gave me the holy bumps. WOW! Well let me see if I can chime in today.

    1. January is National Mentoring Month. Have you ever had a mentor? Been a mentor? How would you rate the experience?
I had to laugh a bit at this Debby cause I think I have mentored my whole life to someone! Being a mom of three daughters the mentoring never stops. However, sometimes they think my mentoring is TELLING them what they need to do! And it is so no sense in fibbing bout it! LOL! But seriously, yes, I had a mentor, an older lady from church that has now gone on to be with the Lord mentor me. She never called it mentoring and I guess I never thought of it that way either for a long time. But she was one that instilled in me the passion for God's Word and taught me about the importance of prayer. If I ever asked for advice (which I did many times) she always gave it to me lovingly, truthfully, and very gracefully. I miss her so much! Over the years, I have mentored many a young woman through teaching ladies bible study. Some have become a little secret project for me as in giving them an extra dose of God's love along with a little wisdom and knowledge (what little I have that is) and though I have no degree except a little wisdom and knowledge I have counseled with many young women over the years. It never ceases to amaze me how God can use people like me that is nothing more than a mere sinner saved by grace that truly just wants to be used for Him.

    2. What current trend makes no sense to you?
Oh i agree with yours and may I add this game that I have no clue what it's called but the kids are doing it on their cell phones and it requires you to drive to different locations and well, I just don't understand why they aren't in school or working instead of riding around playing a game.

Loved your ice cream answer! LOL! Fresh clean sheets!!!! Especially if I have shaved my legs! Those dang clean sheets feel so good to freshly shaven legs. (Which I hate taking the time to do!)

    4. What's the last good thing you ate?
I need to try your little recipe. Sounds yummy. Well for me it was last night. I made a pot of pork and rice using pork that we had harvested in Ga and processed and put up in freezer. It was so good. I really don't know if it tasted better cause my man harvested the hog and we processed it ourselves or if it was just that good.

    5. Describe life in your 20's in one sentence.

Birthing babies! One at 20, one at 25 and one at 27 and lost a baby between the first two. YEP, I am good at birthing them babies!

    6. Insert your own random thought here.

I have left over pork and rice for lunch! YUM!

Have a great day dear friend and enjoy the rest of your week.
    Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  8. I just read something about NBC saying they are going to put the camera on any players taking a knee in the pre-game anthem at the Super Bowl as a show of their support. I find that disappointing but not surprising. Your dinner looks yummy!

  9. What a beautiful song by a miracle of a little boy. I'm loving those sky shots as well!

    Have a lovely week,
    Andrea

  10. Enjoyed your cold sayings. On the morning we left northern Indiana for northern Louisiana the temperature was -12 with a wind chill of -29. Now that's cold for these southern folks. Loved watching and listening to the video. What a blessing! Thank you.

  11. Those winter sky photos are simply amazing, Debby! And your dinner looks delicious! Will have to try that! Loved your thoughts on mentoring.

  12. Brrr...indeed. Fun sayings. So many answers resonated with me. You are the second person who mentioned man buns! I'm going to listen to the video from facebook now. Hope things get warm and warmer for you!

  13. Now I'm crying like a baby while watching that video. God bless the family that took him out of foster care...

  14. Yes,it's been cold here too. Those skies are gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow those sky pictures are awesome. The temperature hit 45 here today!!!

  16. Wonderful sky....loved them. And Loved your answers...your 'pizza' does sound tasty!

  17. Those cloud formations are beautiful. I'm wondering why the clouds are forming that way in your area? It's been pretty cold here too, and raining! Oh my gosh, I'm with you on the ripped jeans - I don't get that at all, and even bothers me when I see women wear them haha. Your pizza quesadilla looks Yummy.

Tears watching the video, it's so very special, and thank you for sharing.

    Stay warm, Debby.

  18. Like the cold jokes! I have enjoyed the cold and the fact that it stayed around for awhile. I hope it comes back, or at least doesn't stay warm, That should be for much later. Your dinner looks delicious and I enjoyed all your answers. Beautiful cloud photos!

  19. Wow, that was an awesome video...it brought tears to my eyes. Loved the cold jokes, it's been pretty cold here until the last couple of days. But it's cooling off tomorrow again with possible ice. Your sandwich looks very tasty and I love the cloud shots. It looks like there were some contrails in the sky that the wind currents moved a bit.
    Take care and stay warm!
    xx Cheryl

  20. Your friend's jokes are funnier than any late night comedian I've heard in a long time! I'd never leave the house if I lived in any of those frigid temp places....I am truly spoiled during our 65-75 degree days during winter here in the AZ desert.

I agree with you on some of the ridiculous trends going on right now. I just mended a pair of The Man's jeans that he wears constantly when he's in his workshop. The knew was completely ripped to shreds (second time I've patched these jeans), & I told him he would be on-trend if he just left that gaping hole...he wasn't buying it!

Hope it warms up for you soon!
    Warm hugs, Carol

  21. Oh, that pizza quesadilla looks divine. I might have to give that a try. Yes, so many things that I think are weird as well, like purple and green hair. Goodness! Always fun to stop by!

  22. I love winter skies. Your shots are beautiful! The extremely cold weather always gives us a feeling that Wisconsin is kinda unique, known for something besides cheese and the Packers. Yeah, I was actually aware of some of those trends but mostly ignore them. My daughter is now upright and moving very slowly. No bending or lifting. Thank you for your prayers!

  23. Oh, wow! That pizza sandwich made me hungry! It looks so yummy! I know what you mean about the cold...brr..it has been so cold here, too. And, now it has rained for several hours...it will be treacherous to drive if the temps drop back down below freezing. I still love winter, though...I just love the stillness I feel at this time of year. God bless you, sweet friend. :)

  24. Those skies in your photographs are amazing, so too is the video you shared.
    My good wishes

    All the best Jan

  25. Your deep freeze must have been awful (I'm quite glad that I no longer live in such cold areas), but the photos you took are so beautiful!

  26. Hi Debby! I loved that Titus passage you used in the question about mentoring. It perfectly illustrated your point!
It's so cold here too, but I guess I should expect that in northern Illinois. I get why it's such a hard thing for you. We had a little snow tonight too. Great...
I love a good pen. No fine points for me, I like the fat pens with lines I can see! You know what else I appreciate? A lovely cup of coffee. Especially in this cold.
    Keep warm my friend!

  28. Oh my...that boy and that song...gave me happy chills and a few tears are flowing!! Wow!

We've had some frigid temps here too. But tomorrow it's back to being warm and on the 50's. Strange weather!

You know one thing about the lint...we save ours as my middle son makes homemade fire starters with the lint, egg cartons and wax. Since we heat by a wood stove, his fire starters help get my fires going! So...we get a little satisfaction out of pulling the lint. Haha! ;)

Your low carb skinny calzone...yes! Looks good.

    Stay warm and cozy...
    Hugs, Amy

  29. Those jokes were hilarious! Having lived in the south, I know how thin the skin gets from the warm weather, and how difficult it is to adjust to these cold fronts that just blow in unexpectedly. Here in the north, we expect the cold, and really need it. It has been quite warm here the last two weeks, in the high 30s, which is warm for us. Usually in the 20s this time of year or lower. So, the weather is just wacky! Stay safe and warm my friend, as I see more weather may be headed your way. I enjoyed your hodgepodge as always, especially the song sung by Christopher, what an inspiration he is, and how amazing are his adopted parents to help him in this journey. Have a blessed week dear friend!
