Honeysuckle

Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.
He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Ephesians 5:2

Honeysuckle Hunting
~by Heidi Mordhorst

It could be anywhere.
We stand stock still and sniff
the green breathing of daisy, vine and leaf.

Ears pricked and noses high,
we listen for the drowsy hum
of yellow golden honey.

There, on the fence!
We'll steal it from the bees,
pluck a tiny trumpet blossom,

pinch the end with finger and thumb,
like biting the vanilla-dripping tip
of an ice cream cone.

Slowly, slowly, draw it out--
pull the stamen through, tongue poised
to catch one crystal drop of sweetness.

Did you ever suck the juice from a honeysuckle bloom when you were a kid?

Surely heaven will be overflowing with honeysuckle!

  2. Dear Debby, Yes I did suck the sweet juice from those trumpets as a child! The smell and fragrance are so sweet and just a heady scent. We do not have any on our land here but we did have some many years ago. And yes Heaven will be filled with all the flowers and scents we long for! Happy wonderful weekend to you my dear friend!

  3. Your photos make me want to suck the sweet juice out of them now :) I am not sure if I ever have. . . We don't have Honeysuckle where I live, but I have a flower that blooms in August that is so sweet and fragrant it makes me think of Honeysuckle.

Your photos and words are just lovely. Whenever I visit your blog I find rest and peace - it's always beautiful :) Hugs to you, dear Debby Ray!

  4. I like the very first line in the scripture you quoted from Ephesians. I think I'll add it to my journal tonight. If we could only remember that...most everything else would fall into place. Love the sweet honeysuckle. Sure makes me think of growing up in Arkansas...summers were the best! Sweet hugs, Diane

  5. Honeysuckle has a beautiful scent, we had some growing on the dividing fence but it is gone now. I think the neighbours may have taken it out, unfortunately.

  10. This is beautiful Debby! I never did what you described but it would be lovely! Maybe this is what is tucked into our little forest behind our house that smells so sweet. Does it last all summer?

  11. Love honeysuckle, but never tried tasting it. When we lived in Tennessee back in the early 70's I ussed to ride my horse down an old lane that had about 1/2 mile of fence coveredin honeysuckle. Sometimes the scent was overwhelming. Beautiful pics! and love the words!

  12. No, I've never done that - didn't even know you could! I do remember squishing mint leaves between my fingers and smelling that fresh smell. Isn't it funny how smells can bring back such wonderful memories?!

    GOD BLESS!

  13. Yes. Love the sweet smell and the sweet drops. When I started reading I wondered if you were going to mention that. It's been a long time since I've done that. I can taste and smell it now. Another one of God's small beauties and pleasures that we never even consider.

  14. That's a beautiful post and photos. I've not done that to a honeysuckle but have done it to pink clover. :)
