Falling Back on the Hodgepodge

Happy first day of November!

Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend and I always look forward to it...
...I know, most people think I'm nuts (and they just may be right).

When I leave to go home from work it's nearly dark
and when I go to work in the morning, the sun is blinding me!
So why do I like it?
First of all, I really like having that extra hour on Saturday evening.
We turn our clocks back after supper and it's just enough to trick my mind into thinking
that I am actually gaining an hour...I never use it for sleeping purposes.
You see, I seem to have this built-in alarm that doesn't allow me to slumber more,
just because the clock says I can.
Most weekday evenings I'm just ready to get home and stay there.
The thought of coming home, gettin' in my jammies and all cozied in on a cold evening
is just one of those simple pleasure I enjoy this time of year!

So let's get on with the Hodgepodge, shall we?

It's where Joyce asks the tough questions and we answer them on our blogs.
But you already knew that, didn't you?

1. What does/did Halloween look like at your house this year? Did you decorate? Pick pumpkins? Carve pumpkins? Expect trick or treaters? Wear a costume to a party or event? Make a costume? Feel glad you didn't have to come up with a costume? Cook a Halloween themed treat? Eat all the leftover candy?

It's actually Halloween night as I sit here writing this post and this is what it looks like: The house is quiet, Oscar is lying next to me on the couch while Tasha is asleep on the love seat. Jim is working (as usual), I didn't carve a pumpkin this year and we have had zero trick-or-treaters so far. I bought a bag of Reese's Cups just in case. Each year the number goes down...so if last year was zero, we will have less than that this year. I do not decorate for Halloween and haven't since my kids were little. I will occasionally dress up (a little) but nothing too garish.

This was shortly after Jim and I were married at a party we attended. I'm the one in the deputy's uniform...in case you didn't recognize me.

And this was last year at the PT clinic, shortly before election day. I was "Ms. Patriotic" and the bright blue eye shadow is about as scary as it gets! I remember how much more fun Halloween used to be when I was a kid...we usually made our costumes from some old clothes and anything we could find but I do remember when I had a Casper the Friendly Ghost costume...oh yeah, and Heckle and Jeckle, remember them? Actually, I dress my dogs up more than I dress up myself.

This year. no costume for me and no Halloween treats were made and few were eaten. They came passing out candy at work today and after eating a few pieces, I felt sick. I can't eat too much sugar these days and that's a GOOD thing!

2. What are you waiting for? Elaborate

I guess I could say that I am waiting on many things but as the world grows more and more chaotic, I find myself wondering and waiting for everything to settle down a bit. I don't have a lot of confidence that it will happen but we can still hope and pray. I'm afraid I might be waiting until Jesus returns.

3. Do you wish you were friendlier, braver, more creative, more athletic, or something else? Explain.

Sometimes, yes to all of the above but I don't spend a lot of time dwelling on it. There is always room for improvement and the "something else" would most definitely be SKINNIER...and that, my friends, needs NO explanation. 😕

4. When it comes time to paint are you a do-it-yourselfer or do you hire someone? What was the last paint job completed at your house? What room most needs painting now? How do you feel about wallpaper?

I have always been a do-it-yourselfer. The last paint project that I completely finished would be my kitchen cabinets. Here is a photo from my post about it.

I was going to paint the hallway BEFORE we got the new floors last winter but one thing led to another and I knew there would be more painting to be done later so I just stopped. You see, I need a deadline and now I have one...well, kinda. By putting the house on the market hopefully in the spring, all of my unfinished projects shall finally be complete. So after the hallway is finally finished, I will start painting all of the doors and baseboards. And anyone who knows me at all knows that I still love my wallpaper...not everywhere...just here and there....like in the bathroom...

...the bedroom

...and inside of my hutches...

...and of course, my back splash in the kitchen which is textured wallpaper spray painted "tin".

5. What is one specific thing you felt gratitude for in the month of October?

I specifically am very thankful for the cooler temps that October brought (finally!) and as of the end of last week, water in the well in Tennessee! You just can't move forward without it.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

It is now 9:00 PM on Halloween. Not. One. Trick-or-treater. It looks like I'll be needing to get rid if that bag of Reese's Cups. Any takers??

Enjoy the rest of your week!

  2. The cooler temperatures are certainly something to be grateful for! We actually got our first snowfall on Sunday night, but it all disappeared rather quickly as the sun came up Monday morning.

    Blessings~

  3. That doggie costume is the cutest thing!! I'd sure be willing to send you some of our cooler temps. And I wish we never had Daylight Saving Time. I'm always jetlagged from when we move from one to the other. And after the weekend it'll be dark so early, like 4:30 or so. All the best on your house in Tennessee and the presale work that goes with this one.

  4. GREAT Hodge-Podge answers, Deb!

Reese's the best candy, hands down. I always steal a few away from our huge VAT of treats we give away. This year I was surprised because my little mini one was white chocolate! It was great - never even knew they had white chocolate ones! : - )

    Hugs. ♥

  5. We don't have kids come here either but it was a beautiful night and we heard an owl hooting! Enjoy your nice weather and save your candy for next year...hahahahaha! Hugs!

  6. I had a HUGE amount of candy and no takers this year. Love your wedding pic and the dog! You did a fantastic job with the cabinets and I still like wallpaper, too.

  7. You my friend are just too adorable in those pictures. LOVE them! Oh I am with ya sister on the time change. Honestly I wish they would just leave it be and be done with it. Now to play with you today....

I decorate for Fall but mainly my kitchen area as it seems that is where I spend the most time. I do dress up for our family Fall party and love it. At our party all of the kids carve pumpkins. We haven't had trick or treaters in years. We live so far out and now all the kids go to the neighborhoods that are well lite areas, and house to house. Plus with county and church events, they get plenty of party time. Add the schools that list and well, no need to drive to the woods huh?

    2. What are you waiting for? Elaborate
Right now, for Nov. 10th to get here. I am taking about 5 days and deer hunting. Will help with the grands some so the girls can go out to the woods but then I will have several days all to myself in a tree stand. Love it!

    3. Do you wish you were friendlier, braver, more creative, more athletic, or something else? Explain.
Well, there has been times in my life that I wish I were MORE of lots of things. It hit me years ago that all I was to be concerned about was simply being me. Just the way He created me. Regardless of height, weight, social status, clothing attire, or etc. He loved me just the same. I put more effort now into simply being the best Cindy I can be for the Lord and the rest.....well it is what it is!

    4. We are do-it-yourselfer with almost everything. The last paint job we done was in my little room/office at home. It wasn't a big project to tackle so wasn't too bad. I do NOT like to paint though. The next room I thought about re-painting would be my kitchen/dining room (which is one big room). But....it's just been a mere thought at this point. LOL!

    5. What is one specific thing you felt gratitude for in the month of October?
The news of a another grandbaby on the way. This will make #6 and our family is so excited.

    6. Insert your own random thought here.
"The grass may look greener on the other side but the water bill will cost you more".

Hugs and blessings to you Debby.

  8. We don't have kids coming by on Halloween, so I don't buy candy. Too tempting for me to have chocolate around! :) A fun post, Debby, and I loved your pictures. Enjoy the cooler weather and have a great week!

  9. Good morning, dear Debby, and Happy November! Oh, what a lovely time of year!

I had to smile about you enjoying that extra hour on Saturday...that is the number one thing I love about turning back an hour :)

  10. I'm thankful Florida has seen cooler temps too. We had our first backyard fire the other night. So nice!

  11. I enjoyed reading your answers, Debby! Yes, that extra hour is my favorite thing about the time change, also.

My suggestion on the Reese's cups: chop them up and make chocolate chip cookies with them.

  12. Always a delight to visit your blog. Your photos are so charming. We don't get trick or treaters here, so we go over to my daughter's. It's a young neighborhood with families. More fun.

  13. Loved seeing your old Halloween photo, Debby, and the cute, Patriotic one of you!
I still love wallpaper here and there, too. I especially love your painted "tin"...oh so charming!

  14. Haha. As I am reading your blog post I got a notice you just commented on my Facebook page. Too funny.

I love the adorable pic of your pup in costume.

  15. I'm with you on the time change and I wish they would just leave the time alone and not have Daylight Savings Time at all.
We always to the painting ourselves. Ken is very handy and can fix and do just about anything around the house.

  16. We often made costumes with things from our dress up box. Remember how dressing as a 'hobo' was a thing? Ha! Good luck with all your projects and enjoy a cozy fall. I'm like you, once I'm in for the evening I want to stay in.

  17. I looked at my calendar to see if we did indeed change the clocks this weekend, and realized my calendar is still on October. When I think about wallpaper I think about the years I helped my parents tear it off the walls of their rental places. It was fun to a point, until we got to the really hard spots because the previous owners would just place more and more on top of each layer.

  18. Hello Debby, I enjoyed reading your answers. I'm with you on #3! You did a great job on your cabinets. Hope you have a great rest of the week!

  19. I love your cabinets!

Our neighborhood doesn't get trick or treaters and I'm okay with that. I don't need all that candy sitting around!

  20. I agree with you about the end of daylight savings time.It doesn't matter what the clock says, or how we change it,I still have to get up at the same time and so also go to bed at the same time. Not many people agree with me, but I don't like this DST.

  21. Is that your husband doing a very good Donald Trump?? He has Donald Trump down pat. Your husband and Donald Trump weren't split at birth by any chance, were they. =) Oooh....exciting....your home on the market come Spring; that is a wee bit exciting. You have a very pretty and restful bedroom, Debby. Very nice kitchen cupboards, great paint job!

  22. Well I do believe that you chose a good candy for a no trick or treaters night. 👍🏻 I love your kitchen backsplash...wallpaper you say!

We did not have any trick or treaters either. It had been so warm here that our yellow bells and hydrangea had new blooms. Thankful for the cooler temps. Have a blessed weekend.

  26. That was a great picture of you and your husband, lol! Enjoyed your memories of H'n from years gone by. I love your tin wallpaper in your kitchen, that is really a neat trick! I'll pass on the candy.. they make me sick too, if I eat too many! We got 8" of snow here today, so fall is out, and winter is in, its early this year, but it is what it is! Hugs to you today :)

  27. Hi Debby! I love your do-it-yourself projects, and I really remember the kitchen reno. You are so brave! I know I'd just mess everything up. That's a true talent you have there.
We didn't get many kids at the door on Halloween either, but it was COLD here. (In the 30's) Not very conducive to little kids.
I just got back from No. Carolina and we had such a great time. The color on the trees was beautiful, the weather was great...You'd love it there!
I always enjoy personal photographs, and the Halloween ones were so fun to see, thank you for sharing :)

  28. I have a sense that your beautiful home has a calming effect on you, Debby, that inspires cozy and comfy cocooning, especially in cooler temps! Even the soft ambiance of the lighting in these pics suggests that.

I enjoyed this collection of your thoughts and images for October.

    Happy November, my friend!

    Hugs,
    Poppy
