A Paper Medley

Well here we are on the last Wednesday of June...
...can you even believe that??

And what's more, can you even believe that a day has been set aside to honor
PARCHMENT PAPER???

If you want to find out more about parchment paper...or maybe you already know all about it,
Terri has a wealth of information on her blog and it's the subject of this week's
Wednesday Medley.

So just copy the questions from Terri's blog and paste them to yours....
...add your answers and link up to the Medley!

1.  Who knew there was a day to celebrate parchment paper?!  Do you ever use parchment when you bake or cook? Tell us about your favorite way to use it, please.
I can't say I've never used it but normally I don't...and until I read this, I wasn't really familiar with all of the reasons to do so. I guess I have a lot to learn! Excuse me for a few minutes while I run down to the store and pick me up some!

2.  When Terri thinks of parchment paper, she usually thinks about special writing or artist papers. She loves using specialty papers for creating cards or other art projects. Tell us about a creative way you have used parchment paper other than to bake with!
I'm with you, Terri! I love me some fancy parchment papers for crafting and stuff. Have you ever wanted to create some kind of an award or certificate for someone? It can be a gift certificate of some kind for a service you want to give or just to honor someone for an event...they have some really cool ways to make certificates on most PCs. Printing them out on parchment paper makes them way cooler than regular printer paper. I have used it for card making as well and have also printed out a favorite poem in a lovely font making it suitable for framing.
3.  Terri used to be in the cake business and has piped many borders and roses and leaves and letters, etc., etc.  You can make a pastry bag from parchment paper!  Have you ever tried decorating a cake with a pastry bag and specialty tips?  Do you have a picture to share?  Don't be shy, now!
I have never done this with parchment for sure. I have tried a plastic pastry bag before but it has been a long time ago. What I do remember is that it was a messy experience and I didn't do a very good job. That's why God invented those tubes of colored icing with the screw on tips, right?
Tell us about something you baked or cooked in the past week or so that turned out great, parchment or no parchment.  Will you share the recipe?
Hmmm... I have not done much cooking over the past week or so but I will tell you what I have plans to bake in the very near future...but I doubt it will include parchment paper. I have been hoarding bananas in my freezer that have gotten too ripe...I just cannot bring myself to eat one that does not still have a little bit of green showing on the peeling. So in to the freezer they go for some future banana/nut bread! Those yummy breads will be traveling with us as we make our way to visit our Tennessee bunch for July 4th next week!
5.  The last Wednesday in June!!  How can that be? Has your June flown by or have you been able to enjoy each day and make it slow down for you?
Don't I wish it was possible to make time slow down just a bit! Terri, do you know a secret to make this happen? I am absolutely stunned at how fast time in general is marching on, let alone June.  They say this happens the older we get. There "they" are again. 😉
6.  Tell us something about your week so far, if you will.
Just a regular old week for me...not much going on...yet. I did pull off the first fruits of my cucumber vine!

These are not actually pickles, more like marinated cucumbers and this is the way we like to eat them. Just a little onion slices in the bottom of the jar, a little apple cider vinegar, sugar and water.

There's nothing prettier that fresh produce in or out of a Mason jar! I have several green tomatoes on the vine and normally I would fry me up a batch of fried green 'maters...only I'm not sure how those would set on my tummy. And speaking of my tummy, I found out a week or so ago that I will be having surgery sometime in August. They are going to fix those bile ducts of mine once and for all! (we hope) More about that later....

So...that's it for this Wednesday.
Next week it will be July and we'll be on our way to enjoy Fourth of July festivities
and birthday celebrations in lovely Tennessee!

See you next month!

  1. Wow...those cucumbers look great...I think I would like them like that too. Do you actually "preserve them" that way, or do they have to be kept refrigerated? They look so good. I can't believe next week is the 4th of July...I haven't made any plans or even thought about it. Happy you have a place to go and celebrate. Will be praying for your upcoming surgery in August. Do keep us posted. Praying it will a big success!!!! Have a blessed week and enjoy your time away!

  2. There is nothing better than fresh produce from your garden (or for me from the farmers market). Have a great Wednesday!

  3. Those 'pickles' look delicious!! And I'll have to come visit you, for I've never eaten a fried green tomato in my life. Can you believe it? It's just not something found up here. Enjoy your get together over the 4th! I bet it will be wonderful!!

  4. Those marinated cucumbers look delicious. I too thought parchment paper was for fancy writing but didn't know about the cooking aspect. I can just imagine the mess I would make using parchment as an icing bag. I learn so many things when I visit here each week. I wonder who dreams up these special days for almost everything. Have a great celebration with your family on July 4th, Debby.

  5. I am so glad you are going to get some relief with what we pray is the answer to most of your problems. The "pickles" are so pretty. I am just not domestic where gardening and preserving comes in. Give me a house to decorate or organize and I'm in heaven, but not to do much in the kitchen. So, I admire you smart, industrious women who enjoy it. And, I love all the ideas you've done with pretty papers. I love being creative in those ways as well. What did we do without the computer?

  6. Love me a mason jar with some pretty pickles in it! YUM! Matter of fact, I just flat out love a mason jar! Parchment paper. Oh yes. I got hooked on that stuff a few years ago when baking cookies and have used it ever since. Makes clean up so much easier. I also will use it when making that homemade dough so it won't stick and also when freezing my cakes along with of course heavy duty alum. foil. I have never made an icing bag out of it though. But...I keep a stash of those things in the pantry too for when I need them. I have quite a few little bakers in the family that loves for Nana to pipe a little icing on their goodies. I have a friend that uses parchment paper for almost everything she bakes for easy lifting out of the pan. She cuts her paper larger so she can grab and lift. She said it was the way to go and she never worried about her cakes, corn bread and etc. sticking to the pan. I haven't tried that. But, I spray the mess out of those pans too so nothing does stick! LOL! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  7. I love me parchment paper, Debby, but only use it for baking. You marinated cucumbers look wonderful! My mom always made that as a salad, and so do I. I’m glad that you’ll be having your surgery to give your relief, my friend. 😘 and 🤗 to you.

  8. I have had the same experience trying to use the plastic bag method to decorate cupcakes. It just doesn't work for me. In addition to using the parchment for cookie sheets, I discovered it keep the pan very clean when I cook meatloaf on it. Makes a big difference. "They" can drive you crazy, can't they? I feel the very same about bananas and recently threw some out that I think had overstayed their visit in the freezer. Have a wonderful time in Tennessee and soon you will have your surgery and praying you will be 100% over the top again!

  9. I buy my parchment paper at the Dollar Tree! I stock up every year just before Christmas as it's a great way to bake different kinds of cookies without having to wash the cookie sheets in between.

I've decorated a few cakes over the years but never did get proficient with an icing bag. Never would have even attempted a cone made from parchment! I always used the old metal tube and tips. Worked for me!

I baked with bananas this week, too! Made a Banana Crunch Cake and will plan to blog about it tomorrow.

    Your cucumbers look scrumptious!

  10. Now I do use and love parchment paper, but an entire day dedicated to it? Wow!

Those pickles look amazing. Is that a real recipe or should I just guess?

My the month has gone. Guess that’s what happens when ten days of it go by in a fog. So glad those ducts of yours are gonna line up and behave in August.

  11. I am the same way about bananas! It better still be somewhat green or I am not touching it!

  12. Yum! Your cucumbers look so good and pretty in mason jars! I use parchment paper often. It makes clean up a breeze when baking or cooking. But no, I haven't used it yet this week. I plan to bake a cake for July 1 so I'll be using parchment paper for that. Yes, June has gone quickly and I don't like it. Our summers are too short, about five to six weeks, and we try to squeeze every bit of summer out that we can. Have a lovely day, Debby.

  14. Interesting reading. I use parchment paper a lot. Line my baking sheets with it and use it to wrap loaves that are destined for the freezer.

  15. You are so right about nothing prettier than mason jars getting filled with the fruit of our labors! Love that pic.

I use parchment paper in quilting...when using heat and bond, etc....I put it on top of iron mat till there will be no accidents...or can layer on it and the appliques just peel off.

  16. Your pickles look great! Yum! My mom made the best green tomato relish. I would give just about anything to have another jar of it on the shelf. I tried making it once... it was okay, but not hers. Thanks for joining the Medley today! I had no idea about all the uses for parchment either! Yes to buying a roll to keep on hand!

  17. Those refrigerator pickles look yummy! Yes, I agree that produce in a Mason jar looks pretty!

Enjoy your visit with your Tennessee family! (And no fried green tomatoes. We don't want any tummy troubles while you're visiting. Praying for your upcoming surgery . . . )

  18. You have cucumbers! Mine are so tiny you can barely see them. I do have zucchini (of course) and yellow squash that we are enjoying though. Have fun in TN!

  23. I do admire someone with canning skills. You are right they are a pretty sight for sure. I'm behind as usual with commenting as the summer demands of the yard are a bit overwhelming. Hope you are having a good weekend...the last one in June!
