Rotisserie Chicken-Noodle Soup and a Vintage Slow Cooker

Look...isn't she (I'll assume she's a she) just adorable?
I bought this sweet little thing for a couple of bucks at one of those yard sales...
...one of those one I mentioned in my last post as we were collecting things for the cabin.

That was twelve years ago and I may have used her once or twice when she lived at the cabin.
Oh yes, I have other cookers but I couldn't resist her vintage charm...
...and she is still in such great shape!
~
Just for fun, I googled vintage crock pots and it took me a while to find one just like her.
Oh my goodness, I found harvest gold, avocado green, burnt orange...
...all kinds of others with different motifs on them but I scrolled and scrolled...
...and finally found the "brick" pattern...must be pretty rare, I thought!
It could have been that I was referring to her as a crock pot...
...she is actually a Crock Watcher, manufactured by Hamilton Beach.
Silly me...Rival makes crock pots!

Anyway, look what else I found...an old newspaper ad.
Check out the dateline on it...also, check out the price!
That was a LOT of money back in 1977!

So, all week long I have been watching the weather report
and was thrilled to find out that we are in for some chilly weather this weekend.
Can I just tell you that it thrills my soul to make soup on the first chilly day of the season?!
After a long, hot summer here in the south, I just want to say a big ..."AHHHH"!

So after purchasing a rotisserie chicken (yum) a couple of days ago,
I decided chicken-noodle soup would be on the menu this weekend...
...cooked in my cute li'l vintage crock pot Crock Watcher :)
 ~
Have you ever made rotisserie chicken-noodle soup?
Using that lovely chicken makes such a wonderfully tasty broth.
Here's how I make it:

In a large saucepan, saute a chopped garlic clove, celery, carrots and onion...
...the amount is up to you, in olive oil and a little butter until slightly tender.
When the veggies are done, add a bit of broth to de-glaze the pan so to get all of that good flavor.

I then put what's left of the chicken, including the carcass into the same pan,
adding just enough water or chicken broth to cover it.
There is so much meat and great flavor in the carcass so just boil the heck out of it...
...for maybe 20 minutes or so.
~
Remove chicken from the pot and cool long enough to be able to handle it.
Pull all the meat off bones...and now you can throw away that ugly carcass!
Transfer it all into the crock and add more broth for the amount of soup you desire.
I include some of the celery leaves as well...it enhances the flavor and they are pretty too.
Add the seasonings you desire...salt, pepper and a little dried parsley is what I use.
~
When the soup has had plenty of time to cook together (remember the chicken is already cooked),
add whatever noodles you like...however many you like...it's up to you!

It doesn't take the noodles long to cook so I add them about 20 minutes or so before time to eat.
It's best not to over cook them or they will get mushy.

Before you know it, it's time to eat!
Give me a few crackers or some crusty bread and I'm good to go!
~
Yep, my little vintage CROCK WATCHER still works great after all these years!

Are you enjoying fall weather in your area this weekend?
Blessings,

  3. I didn't know there was such a thing as a Crock Watcher. What a great find and it still works after all these year! I still have our original gold crock pot that we got as a wedding gift 37 years ago but our son gave us a new one 2 years ago which has the removable liner. Much better than my old one. Your soup looks delicious! Thanks for sharing.

  4. This was so cute to see the old girl; still cooking and holding her own! I think your soup looked just yummy. I liked seeing that add about it also, and yes, that was a lot of money to pay for one all those years ago. They make stuff so cheap now days. The days are getting shorter and nights seem to drag. I hope you enjoy this lovely fall weather. I had to start a fire this morning! Geesh...
    Blessings to you!!! Roxy

  5. That sure does bring back memories! I was given one when I went off to college, and it was similar. I think it was green. Looks like good soup. We made up a batch of soup today too, ushering in a cool weather snap. I am so DONE with heat and humidity. BTW, you new header is beautiful!

  9. Well if she isn't the cutest! And your soup looks quite scrumptious! I have a terrible cold so maybe I will send my husband out to get some chicken so I can make a tasty soup like yours :)

    Hugs to you, sweet friend!

  10. Hi Debby! It's kind of like calling all tissues "Kleenex" right? I have never heard of a "Crock Watcher", but it sounds like they wanted to go head-to-head against the Crock Pot!
I can smell that soup from here! It's gotten to be instant fall around here. I finally put away the capri's and I'm looking for my sweatshirts. You'll be using your old friend quite a bit in the weeks to come.
    Happy Sunday!

    1. You are exactly right, Ceil...I always call any brand of tissue a Kleenex too. I think soup gets better as you eat it as leftovers. It's going to warm up here in next few days and I won't want any soup then...I better eat up!!

  12. Yum! I love soup and chicken noodle is one of my favorites. I use the rotisserie chicken, too. It's a great way to use leftovers and makes a tasty soup. The crockpot still looks good!

  13. That soup looks delicious! And I'll take the crusty bread, please, right out of the oven! Lots of Wisconsin butter on it too, please. ;-)

  14. It's still hot here today in our mountains. But the nights are getting cooler. So, I'm cheating and dipping into my pumpkin spice stuff - creamers, cappuccinos. What's next? Pie? (maybe...)

This recipe sounds delicious! Sometimes there's nothing better to eat than a warm bowl of soup. That in itself reminds me that autumn/winter is in the air! But do you know that I have a husband who will not eat soup??? Or pie, or ice cream, or any number of things. He's very texturally-challenged. It's OK, I can make (and eat) this stuff for myself!! HA!

    GOD BLESS!

  15. HI Debby! Oh, the little crock pot is so cute and that just proves - they really don't make them like they used to. Your chicken noodle soup looks good too! I love soup. Thanks for popping in to see me and your sweet words.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  16. I forgot! The painted primed our cabinets and used an oil based paint on them in a satin finish. He liked Benjamin Moore paint and used that. I hope that helps. I don't know exactly which paint it was though.
