Stump Garden

Where I live in North Carolina, we are surrounded by tall trees all around the yard.
Sometimes these trees die and fall on your house :(
This one did just that a few years ago during an ice storm.
My husband had just gotten out of the shower when a huge branch fell through the roof,
into the bathroom and actually into the bathtub where he had just been!
Oh well, that's another story for another day...this about stumps.

What do you do with such an unsightly thing without digging up a huge chunk of the yard?
You plant flowers in the hole of the dead stump, that's what!

And here's what I did with the rest of it.

And the best part is, the holes for planting were already there because it was rotten in the middle!
Aren't they lovely?

This my friends, is what I call my stump garden :)

Have a great week!

  2. How beautiful! And the soil that comes from an old stump as it rots is so rich! Your flowers are gorgeous! Enjoy your afternoon!

    1. You bet...so glad we didn't get rid of them....yet. The cut ones will probably not last another year.

  4. I adore impatiens ... my favorite flower. I used to have luck with them, but the heat is so intense here, even in the shade they wilt. I love what you've done with them in the stumps. So creative.

  5. I should clarify ... a rose is my favorite cut flower, but impatiens are my favorite garden variety.

    1. Thanks,Dayle...I'm right there with you on the roses. I attribute the good growth of the impatiens to fact that they stay so moist being planted inside the of the stump. I normally don't have great luck with them either. They do get plenty of shade at the edge of the woods too :)

    1. Thank you Bonnie! So glad you stopped in. After the impatiens are gone at the end of the summer, they may fall apart since they are getting quite soft. I may wind up with a pile of mulch!

    1. Karen, the nutrients in the rotted wood must really act as a great fertilizer plus really holds the moisture in too! Thanks for your comment and visiting my blog!

      Have a great weekend :)

  15. Great idea! Unfortunately hubby has a stump grinder :-( but I'll try to plant the next one before he makes it disappear! I like it much better then a plain 'ole planter!

  19. Oh, my! Debby, thank God he was not hurt! We took away a number of big trees in our garden - praying for the one's that are near but belong to our neighbors - love how you used the stumps and pieces as planters - they look wonderful. I am delighted that you shared with Home and Garden Thursday,
    Kathy

  20. Thank you, Kathy...yes, it could have been a disaster but all is well. The stumps (the cut ones) have about had it...falling apart now...they have been in the woods a while. I probably will not be able to use them next year...oh well, I guess I better start looking for another dead tree to cut! lol!
